Internet Kiosk FAQ

Q: Can Kiosk-in-a-Box Display my Web Site?
A: Yes. You can display any browser-based file you want. These files can be offline (on the hard disk) or live off the 'net.

Q: Can I Restrict URL Access?
A: Yes. You may optionally restrict which URLs are accessed. You can do this in one of two ways: define an "inclusive list" or define an "exclusive list" - your choice. These lists support wildcards, so you can use - for example - *mycompany.com* to restrict surfing to your site only. The restriction list can include as many sites as you want - there are no limits. You can also optionally display a disk-based URL that displays your custom "restriction" message when a restriction event occurs.

Q: Can I Generate URL Addresses Using a Formula?
A: Yes. You may optionally process user responses and/or {credit} card information and generate a URL based on this information and send it to your server. Great for membership and/or credit card processing applications.

Q: Can I Restrict Downloads?
A: Yes. You can define certain protocols (like "ftp", "mailto", etc.) to be restricted.

Q: Does Kiosk-in-a-Box Handle Multiple Browser Instances?
A: Yes. You have the option of either "killing" all newly spawned browser windows or "folding back" the new window into the current browser window. Your choice.

Q: Can I Allow Users to Enter In Their Own URL?
A: Yes. Using an Input Field widget, you can design your system to accept user input and then surf to their URL specification.

Q: Do I Need to Be Online All The Time?
A: No. You may either user Dial-Up Networking or set Kiosk-in-a-Box to be "always online" - your choice. You can also set timeouts for automatic disconnection and/or optionally set it up so you disconnect each time you access a non-"live" page and/or kiosk screen.

Q: Does It Work With Netscape?
A: No. Kiosk-in-a-Box uses Microsoft's Internet Explorer ActiveX control. Netscape currently doesn't have an ActiveX control. If your project requires Netscape, use the Web Kiosk Commander, available off this site.

Q: Can I Display Page Download Progress?
A: Yes. Drag & drop a text object onto the screen. Assign it the Special Text object (widget) of Download Status. Size it and place it anywhere you want! This widget dynamically displays the current download progress of each page accessed. You can define this widget to be either horizontal or vertical, and assign it it's own color, height and width.

Q: Can I Display the Current Dial-Up Networking Status?
A: Yes. Drag & drop a text object onto the screen. Assign it the Special Text object (widget) of Connection Status. Size it and place it anywhere you want! This widget displays the current state of your dial-up connection. It also displays E-Mail status/progress, whether you're sending E-Mail or retrieving E-Mail.

Q: Can I Display the Current Web Page Title?
A: Yes. Drag & drop a text object onto the screen. Assign it the Special Text object (widget) of Web Page Title and your done. Size it and place it anywhere you want!

Q: Can I Restrict E-Mail?
A: Yes. This is done just like URL restriction described above.

Q: Can I Process E-Mail?
A: Yes. You may optionally process "mailto" hyperlinks. When one is touched - and it's not restricted - you are transferred to a custom screen (which you may design any way you want) that allows for E-Mail message composition. The downloadable demo has an excellent example of an E-Mail composition screen.

Q: Can I Retrieve E-Mail?
A: Yes. You first design a screen that collects the user's server, login, and password information. Then you may provide the user with a button who's action is "Retrieve E-Mail". Kiosk-in-a-Box will log onto their server, and if E-Mail exists, download the text component of their E-Mail and convert it into an HTML file that they may then view.

Q: Can I "Fake" Sending E-Mail and Just Save the Messages to Disk?
A: Yes. You can either send E-Mail "live" or fake it to disk. Your choice.

Q: Can I Save All Entered E-Mail Addresses?
A: Yes. You may optionally save all E-Mail addresses to disk. You may optionally have these addresses either E-Mailed or FTP'd to you on a daily basis as well.

Q: Can I Attach a Photo to an E-Mail?
A: Yes. You can capture images of your kiosk visitors (using the included Internet VIP software) and attach the image to their E-Mail.

Q: Can I Attach a Signature File to Each E-Mail Message Sent?
A: Yes. All you need to do is define a "sig.txt" file in the "\email" folder and your message will be optionally appended to every message.

Q: Can the "From:" Component of All E-Mails be "Fixed"?
A: Yes. You can either allow a user to a "From:" address or you can "fix" the "From:" to any string value you want. Your choice.

Q: Can the "Subject:" Component of All E-Mails be "Fixed"?
A: Yes. Just like with the "From", you can "fix" the "Subject:".

Q: Can I Attach a File to Out-going E-Mail?
A: Yes. You may optionally specify a file to be attached when sending E-Mail.

Q: Can a User "CC:" Other Addresses When Sending E-Mail?
A: Yes. You can design your E-Mail composition screen to include additional "CC:" fields that users may then optionally modify to copy other addresses.
